Welding industry peak body Weld Australia has developed two free online welder safety training courses, helping welders navigate the different hazards that different welding locations might present.
The courses, available at weldtraining.online, aim to give welders of all descriptions essential knowledge on how to protect themselves from hazards like burns and harmful fumes.
The courses also reinforce procedures that should be used in the correct handling of gas cylinders and welding machines, as well as establishing the right set up for work.
The hierarchy of controls is discussed, with a particular focus on engineering controls and the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Assessment and certification for course participants is also available.
Weld Australia CEO Geoff Crittenden says companies can use the courses to improve their own staff induction programs, ensuring all employees start with a solid foundation in safety practices.
“Or, the courses can be used as part of ongoing training to keep employees up-to-date with the latest safety techniques. Regular refreshers help maintain safety awareness, reducing risk of accidents, leading to lower workers’ compensation claims and insurance costs,” he says.
“If you’re a hobbyist welder, or know someone who is, safety education is just as important.
“Our free courses can provide you with the knowledge to safely enjoy welding at home, protecting yourself, your family and your property,” he adds.
Manufacturing and Engineering training
Another training package developed by Weld Australia and local TAFEs achieved global recognition earlier this year, with the Manufacturing and Engineering (MEM) training package of learning resources winning the Andre Leroy Prize at the 2024 International Institute of Welding (IIW) Awards in July.
The prize recognises a contribution to scientific and technical training or teaching of either welding or allied processes, weld quality control, the results of the application of allied processes, or problems raised by the behaviour of materials and welded construction.
Developed to deliver 12 welding and fabrication units of competency, the course is available online and can be completed entirely by mobile phone.
“Our goal was to reimagine the learning process by providing a user-friendly interface and diversified delivery methods that cater to the varied needs of our students,” Crittenden said.
“The completely online and accessible nature of the MEM Resources ensures that learning can happen anytime, anywhere, and at a pace that suits each individual.”
