The amber variant of Australian lighting manufacturer Vailo’s flagship Zenith Gen-V stadium light, designed for use in areas with sensitive ecosystems, has won design plaudits following its launch earlier this year.
Designed for outdoor lighting, the amber lights meet the illumination needs of humans while being less attractive to insects than lights with a blue-rich spectrum.
Vailo engineering and production manager Phil McKenzie said at the light’s launch that the PC Amber variant would help to minimise the impact of LED lighting on nocturnal wildlife behaviour and circadian rhythms.
“PC Amber LEDs contribute to biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecosystem management in wildlife-sensitive areas by eliminating blue light while maintaining a broad spectrum of emitted light for effective outdoor area illumination for human use,” McKenzie said.
The luminaire retains other features of the original Zenith Gen-V, including internally-wired components resistant to cockatoo interference, a tempered glass lens with UV protection and an IK09 impact rating, specialised optics, a lightweight design and a powder-coated finish.
Vailo picked up two Australian Good Design Awards for its Zenith Gen-V PC Amber Floodlight in September, recognised in both the Engineering Design and Product Design categories.
The award judges said the light balanced “human usability with ecological sensitivity.”
“The balance between effective lighting and ecological considerations make this luminaire a noteworthy innovation in outdoor lighting,” the judges wrote in their award citations.
Vailo founder and Chief Executive Aaron Hickmann said the industry recognition was important for his team, which had put a significant amount of time into developing the Zenith PC Amber Floodlight.
“We’re very proud of this light, and we are continuously researching new ways to develop our products for the Australian lifestyle and create less of an environmental footprint,” Hickmann says.
