Lofty ambitions for Atlas CEA QIS 220 generator

An Atlas CEA QIS 220 generator has been installed at a high rise apartment block in Queensland for backup power.

Stowe Electrical, an electrical and communications installation and service contractor, recently installed an Atlas CEA QIS 220 generator for stand-by power for a new 45-storey high rise apartment complex in Broadbeach, Queensland.

As a highly efficient 220kVa diesel standby generator, the Atlas Copco QIS 220 has a footprint that is 25 per cent smaller than its competitors, while still providing a 13 per cent higher load factor and 31.7L/h fuel consumption, says Atlas CEA.

The QIS 220 has been designed for a diverse range of applications, from data centres and healthcare to manufacturing, utilities, retail and dense living.

“We needed a generator that had the capacity to run emergency stand-by power for the complex in the event of an outage, particularly to run emergency lighting and power for the elevators,” Stowe senior project manager Gary Catchpole says.

The generator had to be craned into position on top of the 45-storey apartment complex, where it was installed on the roof.

“We originally placed an order with a competitor but their unit was going to be seven weeks later than initially planned and the onsite tower crane was coming down in two weeks, so there was a limited window of time to get the generator in to position,” he explains.

The team at Atlas CEA had the QIS 220 available but had a very confined turnaround period of just two days.

“Our team had to build the machine to Stowe’s specification within the short time frame, allowing for a purpose-built frame with certified lifting eyes to be made for the crane. This had to be supplied and fitted to install the unit,” Atlas CEA general manager of sales Kevin Ennis says.

“This was completed and then sent to site before the generator was lifted into position on the roof of the 45-storey complex, without any complications.”

Now in operation, the QIS 220 hasn’t missed a beat.

“We have full confidence in the 220kVa to handle the task,” Ennis says.

“Not only is the generator highly reliable, but our team of technical experts have the knowledge and skill set to ensure the unit is ready to go when needed and is well maintained in preparation for use.”
