Cat has announced the launch of its new flagship rugged smartphone, the S61.

The Cat S61 replaces the Cat S60 at the top of the Cat phones food chain. The new model boasts an integrated FLIR thermal imaging camera, built-in laser assisted distance measuring and an indoor air quality sensor.
The S61 features a 5.2-inch (13.2cm) FHD touchscreen which has been optimised for outdoor use and the touchscreen can be operated with gloves on or with wet fingers. The device uses the Android ‘Oreo’ operating system and runs on a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal memory (which is expandable via MicroSD).
As with all Cat phones, the S61 is fully ruggedized for use on site or in the warehouse. Cat says the S61 has been built to withstand repeated test drops on to concrete from a height of 1.8 metres thanks to its reinforced aluminium die-cast frame and Corning Gorilla glass.
The S61 is also IP68 dustproof and waterproof (tested in water up to three metres deep for one hour) and conforms to US military standard MIL-STD-810G.
The in-built FLIR thermal imaging system on the S61 features enhanced software for greater image contrast and a temperature range expanded to 400 degrees Celsius. Through the Cat S61’s MyFlir app, users can live-stream thermal imaging direct from the site.
“We know that 60% of Cat S60 customers use the integrated thermal camera at least once per week and the temperature and resolution improvements found in the new Cat S61 will open up thermal imaging to many more users and use cases,” Bullitt Group (Cat global mobile device licencee) CEO Peter Stephens says.
The smartphone’s integrated laser assisted distance measurement system allows users to measure point-to-point distances of up to ten metres, then also calculate the area within the points. All measurement data is saved within the image taken so that adjustments to measurements can be made without needing to return to the site.
Indoor air quality can also be measured directly by the Cat S61, which uses sensors to alert users when high levels of certain ‘volatile organic compounds’ (VOCs) are detected in the working environment. Common sources of VOCs include paints, solvents, carpets, furniture and cleaning products.
