Caterpillar has released the new 5-tonne compact TH255C telescopic handler featuring a brand new emissions-standards-compliant engine and redesigned components for added strength and versatility.
The new model has a rated load capacity of 2500 kg and a maximum lift height of 5600mm. A prominent new feature is its new fuel-efficient, 2.9-litre engine rated at 74hp. The engine is available as either a U.S EPA Tier-4-Fnal/EU Stage IIIB version or a U.S EPA Tier 3/EU Stage IIIA version for less regulated regions.
To accommodate the new engine, the engine pod has been redesigned and now includes a new exhaust mounting system and a low-profile hood that provides significantly enhanced visibility to the right of the machine.
A new cooling package features a variable-speed, hydraulically driven fan with an available variable-speed reversing feature.
A more powerful hydrostatic drive system on the TH255C gives more traction to the operators for rougher terrains.
The hydrostatic transmission in the TH255C incorporates a variable-displacement piston pump and a variable-displacement piston motor which Caterpillar says combine to provide smooth application of power at the wheels without the need to change gears.
Caterpillar adds the controllability provided by the TH255C’s four-wheel-drive propel system complements its three-mode steering system to allow precise placement of loads.
New axles for the telehandler have larger final-reduction hubs for added durability and new, larger wheel assemblies that use an eight-lug bolt pattern. Other new features include a redesigned electrical harness and roof-mounted air-conditioning system.
Inside the cab, a new instrument cluster and dash panel allow for better performance monitoring by the operator.
An intuitive control layout-including a single electrohydraulic joystick – offers operator comfort and efficiency.
The TH255C is fitted with a standard universal quick coupler that is compatible with many Cat skid steer loader work tools.
Caterpillar says serviceability is another plus on this machine, with all routine points accessible from ground level and daily maintenance limited to fluid-level checks and a walk-around inspection.
