Five cranes were ordered in 2015 and the other five in early 2016, with delivery scheduled for the third quarter of this year.

"The newly redesigned cabin on the latest Kalmar straddle carriers features a more spacious interior, as well as a new window geometry that reduces night time reflections and cabin noise," DP World Australia chief operating officer Max Kruse says.

"Kalmar straddle carriers have been chosen for our existing terminal in Melbourne for their energy efficiency, reliability and operator comfort."

Kalmar’s Australasian vice president Peter McLean says it’s crucial to use the right equipment, especially on such large sites.

"We are excited to receive this order from our long standing customer DP World," he says.

"We are pleased to offer them a solution that boosts productivity, efficiency and safety through increased operating performance and superior operator ergonomics."

Kalmar offers a wide range of cargo handling solutions and services to ports, terminals, distribution centres, and heavy industry.

The company specialises in terminal automation and energy-efficient container handling, with one in four container movements around the globe being handled by a Kalmar solution, according to the firm.

It is part of Cargotec, which employs almost 11,000 people globally.
